Interaction of Snowmelt and Bedrock Permeability (Axel Keeß)
Motivation
Recent stduies showed that a decreasing fraction of snow in precipitation can result in lower stream flow. Yet, no satisfactory explanation is avaialble.
Aims of the thesis
Testing of the hypothesis that low bedrock permeabilities represent a barrier for infiltrating water. Hence, if slow snow melt is replaced by rainfall infiltration, bedrock percolation capacities are exceeded and water remains in the shallow subsurface where it is exposed to evaporation.
Methods
Freely available snow simulation products will be compared to bedrock permeabilities on a large scale. GIS and big data processing are primary skills.
